Reminder - Round 8 of Wandsworth Big Society Fund is closing soon!

The Wandsworth Big Society Fund, is a community grants scheme established by the council in order to 'help communities help themselves'.

The 2013/14 fund which is worth £169,000 is available to support local community groups and grassroots organisations such as residents associations, sports organisations, cultural groups and scouts, clubs and guide troops with a turnover of less than £100k. Applications, together with a local ward council or endorsement, must be received by Wednesday 8 January 2014.

freedatabase is a social enterprise. It was launched in 2011 to provide community organisations with free software.

In 2012 the resource was opened up to small businesses, many of which struggling under the credit crunch. As a completely free service, not surprisingly 1,000 database downloads were exceeded within the first year of operation.

Our volunteering story...Housebound Learners

Over 30 voluntary groups and over 120 prospective volunteers came together at The Wandsworth Volunteer Fair on 17 October 2013. Among those recognised at this event for their commitment to volunteering in the borough, was Alison MacDonald of the Charity Housebound Learners (HBL), who was presented with a certificate by London Assembly Member, Richard Tracey [pictured above]. HBL was founded in 1988 to provide learning opportunities to home-based students who can’t easily attend courses, including those who are elderly, have a disability or are isolated for other reasons.

Capital Clean-up funding Now Available!

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, is calling on local communities to join this year’s Capital Clean-up, and help tackle litter, rubbish and graffiti in their local parks, streets, estates, residential areas and waterways.

The Mayor’s Capital Clean-up campaign, in partnership with McDonald’s, is inviting community groups and local businesses to apply for grants of up to £500, or a special litter picking clean-up kit, to bring volunteers together in rubbish clearing events to create cleaner, greener, and safer local environments.

Battersea Summer Scheme, will once again keep young local residents active during the long summer holidays with a range of creative, challenging and sporting activities. Open to those between the ages of 8 and 16 it will cost just £1 each day to take part.

Participants will have the chance to experience a whole range of sporting and artistic activities including judo, tennis, football, dance and even the trapeze. For those with a head for heights, there will be a climbing wall and high rope course, plus the Animal People will be there with some furry (and not so furry) friends.

Justine Greening, MP for Putney, dropped by to meet volunteers from Corporate Executive Board and SHL Group Ltd who participated in a volunteering day at Edgecombe Hall Estate in May 2013. The businesses partnered with Timebank for its Global Services Day held on 17 May 2013. The group helped with a pond restoration project at Edgecombe Hall Estate in Southfields. CEB Chairman and CEO Tom Monahan volunteered alongside CEB staff and were joined by TimeBank Chief Executive Helen Walker.

Volunteers spruce up the Commons to kick-off the Mayor’s Team London spring clean

The Mayor Boris Johnson called on Londoners to roll up their sleeves and help give their neighbourhoods a spring clean during a week of Capital Clean-up events from 9-17 March 2013.

Wandsworth residents responded to the call and a group of 20 volunteers helped spruce up Wimbledon and Putney Commons at a community clean up event on Saturday 9 March. Environmental regeneration charity Groundwork London and Volunteering Wandsworth worked with community volunteers to collect over 30 bin bags of litter from across the Commons.

Hundreds pick up DofE awards

Young people in Wandsworth are demonstrating more ‘get-up-and-go’ than their counterparts across London, with greater numbers taking part in Duke of Edinburgh’s (DofE) Award schemes than in any other borough.

Wandsworth currently has 2,074 enrolled on schemes - more than double the figure five years ago. And between March 2012 and February 2013 the borough's young people notched up a whopping 450 awards.

All change for CRB checks

In December 2012, the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and Independent Safeguarding Authority merged to become the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). The new system will replace the old CRB checking service and will launch in the next few months. It heralds an end to multiple applications for CRB checks every time a volunteer takes up a role at a new organisation. There will still be no charge to volunteers whose placement requires a CRB and it is the responsibility of the organisation you are volunteering with to arrange the check.

Listening Books - Speaking Volumes

Listening Books is a charity that works with over 27,000 people across the UK who have an illness or disability which makes it difficult or impossible for them to read in the usual way. We have a library of over 7000 audiobooks including a wealth of fiction for adults and children. We also run an education programme called Sound Learning, offering books which support the National Curriculum and learning. We have recently been funded to offer places for free to our audiobook library service for ex-offenders, and offenders who are on license or serving their sentence in the community, and who struggle to read the printed word.
