All change for CRB checks

In December 2012, the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and Independent Safeguarding Authority merged to become the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). The new system will replace the old CRB checking service and will launch in the next few months. It heralds an end to multiple applications for CRB checks every time a volunteer takes up a role at a new organisation. There will still be no charge to volunteers whose placement requires a CRB and it is the responsibility of the organisation you are volunteering with to arrange the check.

Listening Books - Speaking Volumes

Listening Books is a charity that works with over 27,000 people across the UK who have an illness or disability which makes it difficult or impossible for them to read in the usual way. We have a library of over 7000 audiobooks including a wealth of fiction for adults and children. We also run an education programme called Sound Learning, offering books which support the National Curriculum and learning. We have recently been funded to offer places for free to our audiobook library service for ex-offenders, and offenders who are on license or serving their sentence in the community, and who struggle to read the printed word.

Calling borough’s Olympic volunteers

Wandsworth residents who volunteered for the Olympics and Paralympics are urged to get in touch with the council.

Wandsworth wants to throw a celebration for local volunteers to thank them for their hard work in making London 2012 such a success.

Volunteers could include games makers, torch relay participants, London Ambassadors, Local Leaders or even athletes. Everyone who was a borough resident at the time they volunteered is invited.

The training for volunteer walk leaders is a one-day course for anyone willing and able to lead walks in the community. It includes practice in leading a walk, how to keep people safe, how walking can help certain health conditions, and information on keeping people motivated.
