Justine Greening MP shows support for volunteers in Wandsworth
Justine Greening, MP for Putney, dropped by to meet volunteers from Corporate Executive Board and SHL Group Ltd who participated in a volunteering day at Edgecombe Hall Estate in May 2013.
The businesses partnered with Timebank for its Global Services Day held on 17 May 2013. The group helped with a pond restoration project at Edgecombe Hall Estate in Southfields. CEB Chairman and CEO Tom Monahan volunteered alongside CEB staff and were joined by TimeBank Chief Executive Helen Walker.
Edgecombe Hall Residents’ Association, Wandsworth Council and Groundwork London are delivering a series of wildlife conservation tasks on the estate’s green this year as part of a £56,000 Heritage Lottery grant to restore the ponds which are of historical importance and a designated wildlife site.
The work included restoring the Edgecombe Hall Estate's pond area and planting a wildflower meadow. Volunteers also got stuck into weeding the pond and investigating some of its inhabitants. Grass seeds were laid on freshly raked soil and plants were planted along the water’s edge. With more than 50 volunteers on hand to help, a huge amount of work was completed which really helped with the restoration of the ponds for the local community and residents.
Dean Vitte, a CEB volunteer said: “It was great to be part of a project like this. It feels rewarding to help out the local community. I can’t wait to revisit the area in a few months and see the impact.”
Tom Monahan, CEB’s Chairman and CEO said about the experience: “This was great fun and it’s powerful to see what a group can get done together.”
The volunteers’ hard work has been a real boost to the community by helping to increase the area’s biodiversity value and aiding the future sustainability of the space.
Volunteers are needed on Wednesday 12 June and Saturday 22 June from 12:00 – 3:00pm to help with the remaining tasks. Sign up to volunteer - click here.
